CHARIS MINUTES
Hear Carrie’s full answer on ‘how do I overcome negative self-talk?’
In this Charis Minute, Carrie Pickett addresses the question, “How do I overcome negative self-talk?”. When things turn out badly and one consciously doesn’t speak negatively, but they make an effort to speak God’s words, and yet in their heart, they still feel negative.
They wanted to know if the feeling in their heart disempowers the work they had been doing with their confession.
Does negative self-talk diminish a positive confession?
If there’s negative self-talk going on, internal dialogue that is contrary to the Word of God, that’s when we invite the Holy Spirit. For the transformation of our minds, we need the Holy Spirit’s help. We can get into this whole “Hallelujah, praise Jesus, everything’s great” facade, but there is this whole other internal thing going on. To avoid the confession police from showing up and pouncing on us, we present the ‘ Great Christian Faith’ and say the right things. We need the holy Spirit to overcome negative self-talk.
Negative self-talk and the inward man
Listen, God’s after the heart. That’s what Jesus kept bringing us back to you. Jesus consistently highlighted the significance of inner change and spiritual integrity, prioritising these over external rituals and strict adherence to the law. He conveyed that genuine righteousness originates from the heart, and that external behaviours should be a reflection of one’s inner character.
So invite that accountability of the Holy Spirit and just pray, “okay, if I’m starting to do this in my head, this negative self-talk, help me, Holy Spirit, to be reminded at any time I do that. Could you then minister to me so that I can start processing the inner doubt and returning my heart to the truth, thank you, Holy Spirit”
Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. So, sometimes you have to say those things to yourself to stir up your own faith.
