CHARIS MINUTES
Watch the video to hear Barry’s full answer on Can I Be Cursed By What People Speak Over Me
In this Charis Minute, Barry Bennett addresses the question, ‘Can I be cursed by what people speak over me?’. Can we as believers be cursed by what other people speak over us? Barry uses multiple Scriptural references to take us through an understanding of Jesus’ instruction to Paul on how to minister freedom to people, and the reality of the abundant life that Jesus has given to us.
Redemption is portrayed as central to God’s desire for humanity, with Jesus’ sacrifice freeing believers from the curse of the law. Barry gives an answer to the query that if one is free from the original sin, what then happens to all the subsequent curses that come from that original sin, and he also encourages us toward a life of faith filled with God’s blessings and a rejection of fear associated with negative declarations.
Jesus speaks to Paul about ministering freedom
In Acts 26, Jesus is speaking to Paul and is giving him Jesus’ ministry definition. Jesus says,
to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
Acts 26:18
The first thing that Jesus told Paul is that in the ministry, you are going to have to open people’s eyes. This verse lays out the ministry process in order of the words that are spoken. The Scripture reads that we open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light because the world is in darkness and you have to show people the light that most people are so accustomed to darkness they don’t recognise that.
An example of how God’s grace flows to you during difficult situations
Ministering so that their eyes are opened, you turn them from living under the power of Satan to being under the power of God. They recognise forgiveness of sins, and from there, they can enter into the inheritance that we have in Christ. Everything hinges on having people’s eyes open. I want to take the last phrase in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”Jesus said that he came to give us life more abundantly. What does that mean? I wrote something that blesses me. Maybe it’ll bless you. Abundant life is:
- God living in you.
- His love flowing from you.
- The joy of the Lord is your new normal.
- You’re in His presence and in His presence is fullness of joy. So joy is your new normal.
- You have a renewed mind.
- You have blessed relationships.
- You have his peace
- You have His health.
- You have an abundance for every good work.
Can I be cursed because of the sins of my forefathers?
When Jesus said he came to give us life and life more abundantly. He’s talking about the kinds of things I listed above. So why when you hear many church people talk about their lives, they’re worried about curses? I just got a letter recently, from someone that was being taught they had to repent for the sins of their forefathers. In Second Corinthians 5:19, it says,
that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
God is not imputing our sins unto us. We’ve been reconciled. He’s not imputing our sins unto us. if He is not imputing your sins unto you why would he impute your grandfather’s sins unto you? Come on. I mean, this is silly stuff that’s being taught in a lot of churches. You don’t need to repent for your forefathers. So if you are asking, ‘can I be cursed because of the sin of my forefathers?’, the answer is no, you’ve been redeemed by Jesus. Redemption is God’s heart for you.
Can i be cursed by generational curses?
Galatians 3:13 says,
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. Romans 8:2 says,
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
So now there is a better law, a different law. The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Well, if you’re free from the big one that was unleashed when Adam and Eve sinned, you’re free from all the little ones. All the curses under the law of Moses that people look at and think, ‘I’m cursed to the fourth generation’. No. If you believed in Jesus and you were born again, you’re a new creation. You’re the righteousness of God in Christ.
If you’re seated with Him in heavenly places, there’s no curse up there in heaven. You’re not cursed. You cannot be cursed. You’ve been made free from the curse. Since we are redeemed from the curse of the law, does that then mean we’re also redeemed from the curses others have spoken over us? Yes, it does. The only curses that have any impact on your life are the ones you believe.
So what do I do when people speak curses?
You know, people say dumb things, big deal. The only words that have authority in your life are the ones you receive in your heart and believe. So, if you’re receiving those words and getting afraid of them, then you need to repent of that. You don’t need to break curses. Just repent and say, ‘Father, I believe your word. I am blessed coming in and going out, and everything I put my hand to prospers. My life is blessed. All of your blessings are overtaking me. Goodness and mercy shall surely follow me…’ What am I doing here? I’m speaking truth from the Word of God
Can I be cursed by what others say? The answer is no. Start believing something different. Don’t believe people’s negative words against you, just turn it around and speak the Word of God.
